About Us
As reflected by our mission statement, the Moffett Field Historical Society is dedicated to education about and preservation of the heritage of one of Northern California’s most significant historic sites—Moffett Field.
We recognize Moffett Field’s namesake, Rear Admiral William Moffett, who lost his life in the crash of the Macon’s sister ship, the dirigible Akron. In December 1915, Moffett received the Medal of Honor for his captaincy of the USS Chester in a daring and dangerous night landing in 1914 at Veracruz, Mexico. His Medal of Honor is on display at the museum.

We rely solely on volunteer staff, donations, and visitor admissions to build fascinating displays and bring retired vessels back to life. It is an expensive undertaking but one that is truly important. We can learn a lot from history!
